The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art celebrates the life and work of one of Japan’s most respected Nihonga painters.

Located in Setoda on Ikuchijima, the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art celebrates the life and work of one of Japan’s most respected Nihonga painters.

Hirayama Ikuo (1930–2009), a native of Setoda, is internationally known for his serene depictions of Buddhist heritage sites and the ancient Silk Road, inspired by decades of travel and research across Asia.

The museum’s bright, modern building blends gently into its coastal surroundings and houses a rotating selection of paintings, sketches, and studies from Hirayama’s extensive body of work. Many pieces reflect his deep concern for peace and cultural preservation, shaped by his experiences as a Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor. His signature use of mineral pigments and calm, expansive compositions gives the galleries a contemplative, almost meditative atmosphere.

The garden which surrounds the museum was designed by reknwoned landscape architect Ken Nakajima, can be viewed from the lobby and tea lounge (Cafe Oasis). The ornamental garden is crafted such as to express the scenery of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, with floating island in the center rthat represents Hyotan (gourd) Island which can be seen just off the coast of Setoda. It ia very is a very pleasant place to take a break.

Located halfway along the Shimanami Kaido's main Blue Line route, the museum is easily accessible and makes a rewarding stop for cyclists and travelers interested in Japanese art, history, and the quiet beauty of Setouchi.
