Kosanji Temple & Hill of Hope (Miraishin no Oka)
Kosanji Temple & Hill of Hope (Miraishin no Oka)
Don't let the fact that Kosanji Temple and the Hill of Hope are two of the most popular sights on the Shimanami Kaido put you off dropping by!
Located in Setoda on Ikuchijima Island, Kosanji Temple is one of the most visually striking sites along the Shimanami Kaido.
Built in the 20th century by businessman Kozo Kosanji in memory of his mother, the temple complex is a vivid re-creation of famous Buddhist halls and gates from across Japan. Rich colors, intricate carvings, and dramatic architecture give the grounds an almost otherworldly atmosphere, unlike traditional temples elsewhere in the country.
Behind the temple lies one of Setoda’s most famous landmarks: the Hill of Hope (Mirai Shin no Oka). This expansive monument is constructed entirely from white Italian marble and features sweeping terraces, stairways, and sculptural forms that contrast beautifully with the blue Seto Inland Sea below. From the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding islands and calm coastal waters.
Cyclists traveling the Shimanami Kaido often stop here to explore both the temple and the hill, as well as the nearby Setoda town area. With its blend of spiritual themes, bold design, and memorable scenery, Kosanji Temple and the Hill of Hope offer a truly unique cultural stop along the route.
