Yumeshima Kaido: Exploring Kamijima along the Dream Road

The islands of Kamijima Town are the perfect place to get a taste of island life that has changed little in decades. Although the archipelago can only be reached by boat, four of Kamijima’s islands are linked together by bridges to create a mini version of the Shimanami Kaido, known as the Yumeshima Kaido (Dream Road).

Day 1
  • Yuge Port

    Yuge Port

    Yuge Port on the island of Yuge can be accessed by ferry from the ports of Habu and Karoto on the island of Innoshima (as short distance from the Shimanami Kaido) or from Imabari.

  • Setouchi Koryukan

    Setouchi Koryukan

    Motor traffic is light on the Yumeshima Kaido which is famously free of traffic lights or tunnels, making it a great place for even beginner cyclists. Pick up your rental bike here.

  • Pottery Dodo

    Pottery Dodo

    Small gallery filled with wonderful examples of wood-fired, unglazed Bizen pottery for sale. Pottery workshops are also available with advance notice.

  • Takahama Hachiman Shrine

    Takahama Hachiman Shrine

    Shrine located next to a beautiful white sand beach with an impressive, long tree-lined approach to its main buildings. Behind the shrine is Kyo no Kojima, a small islet which can be reached on foot at low tide.

  • Omori Shrine and Sea Wall Art

    Omori Shrine and Sea Wall Art

    Omori Shrine’s seafront torii gate is some Yuge’s most popular photo spots, as is the colorful mural painted on the seawall a little further north.

  • East Coast Challenge

    East Coast Challenge

    If you are up for a challenge, head east to take the high road along the coast which offers incredible ocean views. E-bikes recommended for beginner cyclists.

    After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to check out some other parts of the Yumeshima Kaido

  • Sashima

    Sashima

    Head south from Yuge Port and cross the Yuge Bridge over to tiny Sashima Island. Here, you can take a sea kayak tour or ride down to pretty Nagaiso Beach. Be sure to check if Book Cafe Okappa is open.

  • Ikina

    Ikina

    From Sashima cross the Ikina Bridge to Ikina Island and west along the island’s pretty southern coast.

  • Iwagi Bridge

    Iwagi Bridge

    The approach to the Iwagi Bridge, the steepest of all the Yumeshima Kaido’’s bridges, has become a popular destination for local cyclists.

  • Iwagi

    Iwagi

    A full loop of the island of Iwagi, known for its “green lemons” and “lemon pork”, is approximately 10 km. At the picturesque fishing harbor of Iwagi Port, a short distance from Iwagi Bridge, you can sample Iwagi’s speciality dish, lemon-fed pork and enjoy fresh, locally-caught fish at local favorite eatery Yoshimasa.

  • Mt. Sekizen Challenge

    Mt. Sekizen Challenge

    Reaching the summit of 370m-high Mt. Sekizen involves a 5-km climb, but attracts many visitors during spring who flock there to take in the sight of its 3,000 cherry trees in bloom.

  • Yuge Port and Salt Bath

    Yuge Port and Salt Bath

    Enjoy a soak in the Shio No Yu Thalassotherapy Spa facility before taking the ferry to your next destination.
