Have you ever wondered what the “Pirates of Shimanami” used to eat to give them the strength to maintain their grip on the essential shipping routes that passed through these islands?

Rice balls are having a moment right now, and it isn’t perhaps too far-fetched to imagine that they would have enjoyed a Kaizoku Musubi, or “Pirate Rice Ball.”

A Bite of History: The Origin of Kaizoku Musubi

Here in Shimanami, the term kaizoku or ‘pirates’ refers to the maritime clans that dominated the Seto Inland Sea during the medieval Sengoku Warring States period. One of the most powerful of these clans was the Murakami Kaizoku.

Unlike the stereotypical pirates, however, these seafarers were esteemed for their navigation skills and played pivotal roles in regional trade and cultural exchange.

Kaizoku Musubi draws inspiration from the sustenance that might have fueled these sea warriors on their voyages. This rice ball is not just a snack; it’s a homage to the resilience and spirit of the Murakami Kaizoku.

The Essence of Kaizoku Musubi: Threefold Harmony

Kaizoku Musubi are not only tasty but are crafted with a philosophy encapsulated by three principles:

1.Triangular Shape (Sankaku)

Since ancient times, it has been believed that gods are found in high places and that their power dwells in the shape of a mountain. Molded into a mountain-like triangle, Kaizoku Musubi symbolize the divine form and the strength of the sea-bound warriors.

2. Three Varieties of Fillings (Sanshu)

Each musubi contains three distinct fillings, offering a symphony of flavors reflecting the Setouchi region’s rich culinary bounty.

3. Triple Satisfaction (Sanpou Yoshi)

This concept ensures happiness for the person who prepares it, the person who eats it, and the community that provides the ingredients, embodying a holistic approach to culinary delight.
