Where can I store luggage while I ride Shimanami Kaido?

The Shimanamai Kaido is one the few places in Japan where you can show up pretty much empty handed and embark on an epic cycle trip. However, while wearing a lightweight daypack to carry a few essential items is advised, what do you do with your suitcases and other luggage while you are out on the bike?
 
Don’t worry, you can enjoy the Shimanami Kaido baggage-free thanks to convenient left-luggage services in Onomichi and Imabari, as well as luggage transportation using which you can ship you baggage either to the end of the route or to places along the way.

Luggage lockers (“Coin Lockers”)

Onomichi JR Station

Over 100 luggage lockers of various sizes are available next to the ticket gates at the main entrance to Onomichi JR Station. Small, medium and large lockers are priced at ¥400, ¥600 and ¥800 per day. There are also 3 extra large lockers (45.5cm x 116cm x 64cm) which cost ¥1000 a day that are great for bulky items and group use. These lockers can be used for up to 72 hours at a time and payment cash or by Suica and PASMO IC Cards is possible as well as with cash.

Apaman Shop (opposite Onomichi JR Station)

Across the street from the Onomichi JR Station on the left, you will see a big blue sign saying “COIN LOCKER”. Here you will find 21 lockers, payable by cash only.

Onomichi U2

16 small and medium sized lockers (cash only) are available at the Onomichi U2 cafe, dining and retail facility on the Onomichi waterfront 200m from Onomichi JR Station. There are also some well maintained coin-operated showers available here too.

Kuroneko (Black Cat) Yamato Transport
Luggage can also be left at the Yamato Transport (Black Cat) office in the Onomichi shopping arcade for ¥500 per piece. The office is open from 09:00-21:00 (closed January 1-3). You can also ship luggage from here (see below).

Imabari

Approximately 36 lockers of various sizes are available at Imabari Station that are accessible 24 hours a day.
 
If using Shimanami Japan’s public rental bike service you can deposit and pick up luggage at the Sunrise Itoyama at Kurushima Straits Bridge or at the ii Imabari Cycle Terminal for a charge.
 
Cycle no Ie guesthouse, located next to Imabari JR Station also holds luggage, as well as bicycles, for a charge.

Shipping Luggage along the Shimanami Kaido

Sagawa Transport Tebura Cycling (Baggage-free Cycling) Service

Same-day luggage delivery service between affiliated accommodation facilities within the area for a charge. Check affiliated facilities here. Luggage must usually be deposited by 10am and can be picked up at your destination after 18:00 (please confirm times with your accommodation).

Those using Shimanami Japan’s bike rental service, but are not staying at an affiliated hotel can drop off their luggage at the Shimanami Japan Office (open 08:30-09:00) and pick it up at the Imabari Cycle Terminal next to Imabari JR Station (open 08:00-20:00 (until 18:00 December to February)).
 
One thing to note is that this service is same day delivery only, so it is not possible to pick up your luggage at a designated location 2 more days later. Please see below if you wish to do this.

WAKKA

WAKKA on Omishima Island also offers a same-day luggage delivery service that covers the whole of the Shimanami Kaido. Details can be found here. 

Ship to pick up 2 or more days later

If you wish to pick up your luggage the next day or later, you can use the standard Kuroneko (Black Cat) Yamato Transport service.
 

As mentioned above there is a Yamato Office in the shopping arcade in Onomichi’s covered shopping arcade and there is also an office close to Imabari Station. It is possible to send between these two offices, stipulating you desired a pick up date. You will, however,l be required to provide a telephone number. Hotel reception desks will often help with this too.
