The Best Beaches Along the Shimanami Kaido & Yumeshima Kaido

The Best Beaches Along the Shimanami Kaido & Yumeshima Kaido

Explore some of the best stretches of sand along Japan's top cycling route.

Cycling Japan’s island-hopping Shimanami Kaido and its gentler sister route, the Yumeshima Kaido, is already a Setouchi dream—glass-calm seas, citrus orchards, and suspension bridges arcing between tiny ports. Add in a string of sandy beaches where you can hop off the bike and plunge into clear water, and you’ve got the perfect way to take relief from the summer heat.

Below is a cyclist’s guide to the most inviting swimming beaches along both routes.

Japanese beach culture can be a little difficult to get your head around. Despite having many months of what would be considered perfect beach and swimming conditions in many parts of the world, the official swim season is short, usually from mid-July until late August. We recommend checking the current year’s dates posted by local tourism and municipal sites before planning a full beach day.

Swimming out of season is allowed, but facilities such as showers are likely to be closed, and lifeguards will not be in attendance. So, unless you are comfortable riding salty, you may want to stick to beaches that have nearby onsen or bath facilities, or are close to your accommodation.

The Seto Inland Sea is famed for its sheltered waters, but currents and boat traffic are real. We recommend sticking to designated swim beaches (kaisui-yoku-jyo) inside marked areas, and following the instructions of lifeguards where present. If you are tempted to take a dip at one of the area’s many inviting unsupervised coves, stay close to shore and be aware of strong and shifting currents.

Shimanami Kaido Beaches

All of the islands along the Shimanami Kaido have designated swimming beaches, many of them right on the main Shimanami “Blue Line” route.

Iwashijima Beach (Mukaishima Island)

Outside of swim season, you are likely to have this long white sand beach that is home to its own Miyajima-style vermillion shrine gate that stands in the sea at high tide. Despite not being an officially designated swimming beach, it is a popular place for locals to enjoy sun, sea, and sand during the summer holidays.

Hishio Beach (Mukaishima Island)

Although the strip of sand in front of the string of cafes that line the Tachibana Coast, just before the turn off to the Innoshima Bridge approach, is popular with casual fishers and the people paddling on the water’s edge, Hishio Beach, further along the coast, is Mukaishima Island’s favorite sandy oasis.

The beach is very shallow here, and there is a children’s pool with a waterslide.

Shimanami Beach (Innoshima Island)

Located at the bottom of the hill below the entrance to the Innoshima Bridge on the Innoshima Island side, a huge white dinosaur welcomes you to the well-equipped Shimanami Amenity Park.

Shimanami Beach has a typical family seaside vibe. The protected swim area is separated from the busy sea channel through which you can watch ships pass, and there are some shady gazebos. During the summer, there is a separate water park with a view of the beach and a curly water slide (admission fee required).

In addition to temporary food and drink facilities on weekends and holidays during swim season, vending machines and the stylish Sea Bridge Book Cafe are open all year. If you have a sweet tooth and don’t mind the climb, head up to Hassaku-ya for a deliciously tangy Hassaku Daifuku, soft mochi rice cakes stuffed with Hassaku citrus, which was born on this very island.

Setoda Sunset Beach (Ikuchijima Island)

Arguably the best-known beach on the route, Setoda Sunset Beach lives up to its name with 800 meters of pale sand facing the evening glow. It’s part seaside park, part watersports hub: think sea kayaking and SUP rentals, a restaurant and shop, and full shower/changing facilities (during swim season, at least).

It’s officially recognized among Japan’s “88 Best Swimming Beaches,” and sits right by one of our cycle terminals—so you can lock up, rinse off, and refuel without leaving the shoreline. Camping and BBQ areas round out the park’s summer-holiday feel.

Setoda lies at the midpoint of the Shimanami Kaido, making it a natural long-lunch or overnight stop; you’ll also find public art installed around the sands, adding a splash of culture to your cooldown.

Utena Beach (Omishima Island)

Off the main “Blue Line” Route, approximately 3km from the small town centered on ancient Oyamazumi Shrine, Utena Beach on Omishima Island is one of the prettiest in the area. The water is very clear and shallow, revealing white sand spits at low tide that are frequented by seabirds.

The Mare Gracia Onsen Omishima hot spring facility, which has some outdoor baths with sea views, is just across the road, making this an attractive beach spot, even out of season (just make sure to rinse very well before you get in the baths).

The Hakata Salt Factory is also here – it is open to the public, and serves salty soft serve ice cream!

Hakata Beach (Hakata Island)

This palm-lined, family-friendly, man-made sweep of sand right beside the “Blue Line” cycling route, Hakata Beach Park is a textbook rest-and-swim stop with a great view of the Hakata-Oshima Bridge. Shallow, gentle waters are perfect for casual dips, and the park equips you with picnic nooks, showers, and changing rooms.

Next door, a market and casual eateries (salt-flavored soft-serve is available here too!) make post-swim snacks dangerously convenient. The beach is busiest during the school holidays, but at other times of the year it’s usually blissfully quiet.

Adjacent to the beach is a glamping facility and Shimanami Dolphin Farm.

Okiura Beach (Hakata Island)

Okiura is a bit of a hidden gem, a ways off the main Shimanami “Blue Line” route. Popular with locals, this 1-km-long stretch of beach on the south side of the island is the perfect place to relax, enjoying the gentle waves and breezes of the Seto Inland Sea.

During the summer swim season, a shop and rest area are also open.

Oshima White Sand Beach (Oshima Island)

This is another stretch of pretty white sand beach without any facilities, but it does have a great view of the Kurushima Straits Bridge and is just a few meters away from the entrance to the approach to the bridge.

You can pick up drinks and snacks at the nearby Yoshiumi Ikiikikan facility, where you can also order more substantial seafood BBQ meals, and join boat tours of the Kurushima Straits.

Yumeshima Kaido Beaches

With its beautiful grove of pine trees and natural white-sand beach, Matsubara Beach on the east coast of Yuge Island offers classic Setouchi scenery and a mellow swimming spot in summer.

You’re a short spin from Yuge Sea Station “FLAT”, the hub for island info run by fully bilingual staff. The facility has showers, Wi-Fi, and even cycling tools and air pumps. It’s an ideal base to rinse off, recharge, and ask about current swim conditions and local attractions.

Other scenic coastal spots in the Kamijima Islands

Matsubara Beach is the only designated swimming beach in the Kamijima islands. The coastal areas listed below are beauty spots rather than swim beaches.

Nagaiso Coast (Sashima Island)

Nicknamed “Hidden Beach” by locals, Nagaiso Beach on the tiny island of Sashima can be found at the point where the Yumeshima Kaido’s Blue Line makes a distinctive U-turn. You won’t find any facilities here, and you will more than likely have the whole beach and the amazing view of the Hiuchi Nada Sea all to yourself.

Nishibe Coast (Iwagi Island)

Seto Inland Sea views stretch to the horizon from the west coast of Iwagi Island. Check out the nearby seawalls decorated with colorful murals, as part of a local community art project held across the Kamijima archipelago.
