Bakery Paysan
Bakery Paysan
Seek out this hidden bakery if you are craving European-style bread
In a quiet corner of Oshima Island, Paysan is a bakery that offers crusty artisanal bread, flaky croissants, hearty sandwiches, and sweet treats crafted using locally sourced ingredients such as the region’s famous citrus fruits, all handmade with care. Despite being well off the Shimanami Kaido’s main “Blue Line” route, Paysan’s unique mix of local additive-free and made from organically grown local ingredients and European-style baking makes it a popular stop for cyclists from near and far.
Named after the French word for “peasant farmer,” Paysan is in a suitably rustic location, nestled on a hillside surrounded by forest. Pushing open the door is like stepping into a fairy tale location. The attached cafe space is furnished with vintage furniture and decorated with interesting knick-knacks with a menu filled with both sweet and savory treats. It is so cozy that you may find it hard to leave.
Opening hours are limited, but if you are craving “real” bread, Paysan is well worth visiting. Be warned, however, they often sell out, so don’t leave it too late in the day to drop by!
