Omishima Orange Picking
Omishima Orange Picking
Pick oranges with a local farmer at an orchard on Omishima Island
Omishima Island, located in the center of the Shimanami Kaido, is renowned for its abundant citrus groves. The island's unique microclimate and fertile soil create ideal conditions for cultivating a diverse array of citrus fruits, including mandarins and lemons. This 40-to-50-minute orange harvest experience provides insight into the island's agricultural practices and the significance of citrus farming to the local community.
This fruit-picking experience is one of many local activities available through WAKKA, a local hospitality provider known for its cycling support and well-appointed accommodation. It is from WAKKA that participants begin their journey at WAKKA. From there, a short trip leads to the orchards, where local farmers share their expertise, guide visitors through their orchards, and explain the harvesting process.
The harvesting season spans from November to April (though December is regarded as the best time of year for mandarin oranges), offering different citrus varieties each month. This ensures that no two visits are alike, and participants may have the chance to sample rare citrus types unique to the region. Tasting freshly picked fruit amidst the scenic beauty of the orchards enhances the sensory experience, making it both educational and enjoyable.
The participation fee covers round-trip transportation from WAKKA to the orchards, a 1-kilogram citrus souvenir, harvesting tools, and interaction with local farmers.
Reservations should be made up to two weeks in advance to ensure a seamless experience. The activity is available daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, excluding Tuesdays when WAKKA is closed. Payments can be made at the WAKKA reception using cash, credit cards, or electronic payment methods.
For more information or to make a reservation, visit WAKKA's official website.
