Mt Senkoji Ropeway
Mt Senkoji Ropeway
While exploring the narrow streets and alleyways that wind their way up and down Mt Senkoji on foot is great fun, the steps are steep and often uneven. If you are looking for a quick, easy, and dramatic way to reach the 144m high summit or get back to sea level, consider taking the Mt Senkoji Ropeway.
The 3-minute ride offers breathtaking views as it sails over the 900-year-old camphor trees of Ushitora Shrine and onto the summit. Here, you’ll find the Senkoji Park, which transforms into a sea of cherry blossoms in spring, making it one of the region’s most picturesque hanami spots. Nearby, explore historic Senkoji Temple, said to date from 806, and take in the stunning panorama of the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with islands and crisscrossed by ships from the stylish Peak observation deck.
Riding the Mt Senkoji Ropeway is not just a convenient mode of transport, but a much-loved Onomichi icon that fits right in with the town’s retro atmosphere.
The ropeway departs every 15 minutes during operating hours.
