Overlooking the Kurushima Strait, it offers sweeping views of powerful tidal currents and the busy shipping lanes of the Seto Inland Sea.

Located on approximately 400m from the entrance to the Kurushima Straits Bridge at the Imabari end of the Shimanami Kaido, the Kurushima Strait Observatory is one of the most scenic viewpoints along the route.

From the observation terraces, visitors can admire the Kurushima Straits Bridge, the world’s first triple suspension bridge and an iconic landmark of the Shimanami Kaido. Ships gliding beneath the bridge and the constantly shifting tides below create a dramatic scene, especially during peak current times. The view at sunset is particularly memorable, with the bridge and islands bathed in warm light.

Inside the observatory, exhibits introduce the unique geography of the strait, its fast-flowing tides, and the region’s long maritime history. The facility also includes a small shop selling local souvenirs and Shimanami-themed goods, making it a nice place to pick up a keepsake from your journey. Light refreshments are available as well, offering cyclists a welcome chance to rest and refuel after the climb.

Conveniently located near Itoyama Park and easily accessed from Imabari, the Kurushima Strait Observatory is an ideal stop to take a break, enjoy the views, and appreciate the grandeur of the Kurushima Straits.
