Stretching 4,105m, it spans the powerful Kurushima Strait between Imabari on Shikoku and Oshima Island, and is famous as the world’s first triple-tower suspension bridge.

Crossing the bridge is an experience in itself. From the dedicated cycling and walking paths, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with islands and framed by the bridge’s fortress-like towers. Below, the strait is constantly alive with motion: strong tidal currents swirl through the channel, and countless boats pass beneath the bridge every day.

One of the bridge’s most distinctive features is its dramatic design—especially the curving on- and off-ramps that guide you smoothly up onto the bridge and back down again, adding to the sense of scale as you approach the main span.

For the best views, stop at nearby observation points such as the Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, where you can admire the bridge from above and learn more about the region. The on- and off-ramps also offer convenient rest stops, which are perfect for taking a break, refilling water, or simply soaking in the scenery.

A uniquely Shimanami option is the chance to "pop down" to the tiny island of Umashima. Halfway across the bridge, an elevator connects the bridge path to this small island in the middle of the strait, offering peaceful views from directly beneath the bridge.
