Murakami Kaizoku Museum
Murakami Kaizoku Museum
The Murakami Kaizoku Museum offers a fascinating look into the world of the Inland Sea's legendary maritime clan.
Active from the 14th to the 16th centuries, the Murakami Kaizoku were elite seafarers who controlled vital sea routes in the Seto Inland Sea. Rather than simple raiders, they functioned as naval protectors, guiding ships safely through dangerous currents while enforcing their authority over the waters.
The museum’s exhibits clearly explain this unique form of maritime governance. Visitors can explore detailed ship models, weapons, armor, navigation tools, and historical records that reveal how the Murakami clan mastered tides, weather, and naval combat. Interactive displays help bring this history to life for visitors of all ages.
A popular highlight is the hands-on experience area, where visitors can try on replica armor and traditional clothing worn by the Murakami Kaizoku and take memorable souvenir photos. It’s a fun and engaging way to connect with history, especially for families and casual visitors.
Set on a hill overlooking the small island of Nojima, which served as a stronghold of the Nojima Murakami clan, one of the three great Murakami clans, the museum also offers sweeping views of the waters once controlled by their fleets.
Take a closer look by taking one of the Noshima Suigun Tidal Currents Boat Cruises that depart from the port just below the museum.
Easily reached by bicycle, it makes an ideal cultural stop for Shimanami Kaido travelers, adding depth and storytelling to your ride through the Seto Inland Sea.
