Overlooking the Seto Inland Sea from a quiet hillside on the coast of Omishima, the Tokoro Museum of Art is a contemporary art museum of distinctive design that uses the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea to great effect.
The building's design is said to have been inspired by Noah's Ark. Enter through American-based Noe Katz's "Kissing Doors" to begin your exploration of the wide collection of contemporary artworks, by artists that include Tom Wesselmann, Giacomo Manzu, and Japanese artists such as Norichika Hayashi and Takashi Fukai.
The artworks merge with the surrounding landscape to create an immersive experience. The atrium, bathed in soft natural light and gentle sea breezes, complements the sloped structure and an open terrace offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea's many islands, inviting visitors to lose hemselves in the captivating blend of contemporary art and natural splendor .
For cyclists on the Shimanami Kaido, the museum, one of serveral in this part of Omishima Island is a rewarding detour, involving a climb that leads to a calm, open space where art, nature, and island views come together.
